Care for Kindergarten and School-Age Children
Under O.Reg.221/11, school boards are responsible for providing before-and after-school programs for children in Kindergarten to Grade 6 where there is sufficient demand and viability. The NHCS School-Age Program complements the core school day, provides a seamless learning experience for children, and aligns with the Ministry of Education’s How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years.
Programs take place in shared space classrooms offering age appropriate programming that is responsive to the needs and interests of the children enrolled. Some children may require accommodations to support their active participation in the program. Families are encouraged to communicate with program staff and the school principal about their child’s needs.
The School-Age Program will include both indoor and outdoor elements and will build on children’s natural curiosities and interests. Outdoor play is an important part of our programs, with activities taking place whatever the weather. NHCS understands that children thrive where they can engage in vigorous physical play in natural outdoor spaces. In addition to providing physical benefits, active play outdoors strengthens functioning in cognitive areas such as perception, attention, creative problem solving, and complex thinking.
Middle childhood is a crucial period of growth and change. NHCS team members and volunteers in before- and after-school settings with children in this age group have an important role to play as mentors, role models and trusted adults. NHCS understands that during the Middle years children thrive in environments that are safe and supportive, and where they feel they are valued contributors and can engage in experiences that are meaningful and relevant to their everyday lives. Our high-quality after-school programs are designed to build confidence, improve leadership skills, promote social relationships, reduce stress levels, and enhance physical and emotional well-being.
A healthy morning and afternoon snack will be provided each day. On full-day programs a nutritious lunch will also be provided.
